“Education within Reach”

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Crawford and Sebastian Counties provides supplemental financial assistance to those single parents who are pursuing a course of instruction that will improve their income-earning potential.

Money goes directly to recipients and can be used to remove any barrier to the recipient’s success such as; childcare, car expenses, groceries, utilities, doctor and dental bills or rent.

Full-time students may receive up to $750 each fall and spring semester. They may also receive $250 for taking summer classes. Part-time scholarships are also available.
SPSF also offers a mentoring program that pairs students with volunteers in the community. The mentors serve as added encouragement to ensure the students succeed. Mentors remember them and their children with cards on holidays and birthdays. They inquire about their children and see if there are any pressing issues the recipients need help solving.
From 2005 to spring 2010, 443 scholarships totaling $229,744 were given. In addition, SPSF has awarded 22 merit scholarships totaling $14,950 with a grand total of 465 scholarships worth $244,694. January 2010 SPSF gave out 51 scholarships for $33,844. Eleven summer scholarships were awarded totaling $2,750.

In 2009, 86% of recipients either stayed in school or graduated.
