at Fort Smith’s River Park Amphitheater
(underneath the Garrison Avenue bridge).
A hearty breakfast will be served.

8:30 a.m. Following the breakfast and program,
volunteers will leave for their work sites.

Mark this date on your calendar and come join more than 500 volunteers for the Day of Caring working on a meaningful activity that brings hope into the lives of people in need.

This community-wide event gives individuals and company employees a chance to “adopt” volunteer projects at United Way’s 31 member agencies. In addition to completing much needed work, company volunteers get to see firsthand how their United Way contributions make a difference at member agencies and in our community.

Plus, it offers a hands-on experience at local agencies and makes a statement that building a stronger community is important.

Power of the Purse
Thursday October 9, 2008

Power of the Purse Event A Hit!

The more than 400 women who attended the Power of the Purse luncheon proved there is power in a women’s purse. The second annual fundraiser on October 11 raised more than $9,000.

Proceeds will go to the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library providing hard bound books to children from birth to five in Franklin and Sebastian counties. “We were very happy with the results,” said Angela Tilley, Executive Director, United Way of Fort Smith Area.

The luncheon, hosted by United Way’s Women’s Leadership Circle, was a way for women in the community to get together at a fun event and, at the same time, be involved in giving. Organizers received many very positive comments and women said they had a great time.

Guest speaker Ronda Rich of Gainesville, GA, spoke during the lunch – catered by the Holiday Inn – about Southern women and their differences to women outside the South. "Southern women and kudzu have a lot in common. Both are practically indestructible, thrive in Southern soil and both refuse to be controlled by man,” said Ronda. She talked about storytelling for which Southerners are renowned and told some of her favorite stories. She ended with a NASCAR story about persisting in the quest of a goal.

The Power of the Purse’s silent auction featured tables full of purses – some of which were themed purses – and included other items such as jewelry, gift certificates, food and spa items as well. As the luncheon neared more and more people made donations to the auction Tilley said.
