United Way Classic Postponed
(Fort Smith, AR – April 17, 2020) – The United Way of Fort Smith Area announced today the postponement of the United Way Classic originally scheduled for May 4th – 9th, 2020. Eddie Lee Herndon, United Way President and CEO, advised, “Considering the latest information, and guidelines set forth by Governor Hutchinson, we have decided at this time to postpone the United Way Classic.” Herndon added, “Ultimately, the health and well-being of everyone associated with this event and the citizens of the Fort Smith community led us to this decision.” The new date for the tournament has been set for August 3-8, 2020. “With the uncertainty of the next 30 days, a postponement of the United Way Classic is the best thing to do. We were fortunate to have an alternative date that fit for the United Way, Cherokee Casino, Hardscrabble and the All Pro Tour. While the date has changed the anticipation of a fun week and great golf tournament remain,” says Gary DeSerrano, President of All Pro Tour.
The United Way has collaborated with several local businesses and individuals to bring the inaugural United Way Classic, presented by Cherokee Casino & Hotel Roland, to our area. The event will include a pro-am event, clinics, parties and a 72-hole championship finishing on Saturday, August 8th. The tournament purse is expected to be $130,000 with the tournament champion taking home $30,000.
Beth Presley, Marketing Manager for Arvest Bank Fort Smith, who is serving as the chairperson for the Classic added, “We are very fortunate that the tournament committees worked so hard on this event prior to the Covid-19 outbreak. Postponing the event is the best thing for our community and we are hopeful that this event will be good for everyone in August. Presley went on to say, “In the past we have held major golf events in August and the community has supported and enjoyed it and we believe this will be no different. The United Way Classic will be a much-needed week of fun and will provide critical financial support for the United Way agencies involved.
